En met vijf gezichten: een snelstromende beek, een vlakke, soms meanderende waterloop, een verlaten rivier kronkelend door bos en veld, een recreatief gebruikte vaarweg en een getijdenrivier met slik en schor. Bedenk maar zelf het antwoord op de voor de hand liggende vraag: zou dit niet de meest gevarieerde Vlaamse rivier zijn?Een echt tafelboek vol schitterende foto's en illustraties.Wat voor André Verstraeten begon met het observeren van vogels in 1963, evolueerde door de jaren heen tot excursies door het Durmeland met aandacht voor de vele facetten van de boeiende natuur, de rijke geschiedenis en het landelijke erfgoed van deze streek. Het werden talloze tochten, zowel tijdens een mooie zomerdag als in de duisternis en ook wel eens vroeg in de ochtend. Niet alleen wandelingen langs druk betreden en bijna onbetreden paden, maar ook fietstochten en talloze trips met de kajak brachten volwaardige natuur- en erfgoedbeleving. Deze veelzijdige ervaring in de Durmestreek is nu gebundeld in dit kleurrijk lees- en kijkboek. Hierbij kon de auteur rekenen op de medewerking meer dan 90 personen actief in de natuurverenigingen en de heemkundige kringen in deze regio. Dit werd nog aangevuld met archiefonderzoek en tal van contacten met musea en openbare besturen. This informative book takes readers on an enjoyable journey through the La Garrotxa volcanoes. In addition to a general description of the main geological and volcano logical values of the region, it also provides a detailed account of the history of the region, its biological diversity, and its cultural heritage including architecture, folklore and gastronomy. La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone was declared a Natural Park in 1982 to protect the numerous sites of special interest that are found in this region.
